Throughout the film, we witness how the protagonist accesses an area he never dreamed of entering: the factory manager’s office. Along his path, he discovers symbolic truths about life and death, destinies, wealth, and poverty. Combining elements of Drama, Action, Mystery, and Sci-Fi over an 11-minute runtime, the film unfolds as an adventurous revenge mission. The core concept is to surrealistically depict a life perspective through the eyes of someone in poverty, reflecting how human history is often driven by circumstances beyond individual control rather than personal choice. Director’s Vision As a director, I believe constructing a unique storytelling approach is crucial—especially after working closely with the scriptwriter and developing the narrative elements. Human history is filled with tragic accounts of poverty, daily hardship, and suffering; while I don’t intend to be overly pessimistic, this represents a tangible aspect of our shared reality. I structured the film by manipulating time and setting (balancing past and present), while dividing the environments into two distinct worlds: one representing poverty and the other depicting wealth. Color palettes were chosen to evoke specific emotional responses for each realm, while key visual symbols invite audience reflection and discussion. The musical score is crafted to help viewers not only see the story through the laborer’s perspective, but genuinely feel it. To convey the protagonist’s internal struggle, sadness, uncertainty, and hesitation, I utilized extreme close-up shots of the actor’s face as he contemplates entering the factory manager’s office. Backward camera movements emphasize his profound isolation, while the climax highlights a decisive shift in his fate. Simple black-and-white visual transitions further anchor his connection to a different temporal realm. Conversely, the rich man’s world presents a sharp contrast in every visual aspect. Altering the orientation of the Statue of Liberty figure with blood introduces subtle themes of freedom versus servitude. Through this film, I aimed to foster empathy and self-reflection, encouraging audiences to appreciate what they have and motivate one another to extend help to those in need, regardless of scale. SHORT FILM · VISUAL EFFECTS · BABYLON GATE FILMS Darkness — Special Effects “Darkness” the Emirati short film directed by the Emirati director Ahmed Zain has been participating in festivals such as Dubai International Film Festival 2010, Gulf Film Festival 2011 and others… I participated in this short film as a special effects editor. The scenes I edited were around 45 to 50 seconds all in all, but it took me around 2 months to complete them. It was all about changing the whole sky background with another cloudy one using Adobe After Effects. There were a lot of challenges performing this type of editing because the actor who was driving the bicycle had a lot of brightness on him due to shooting during summer in the United Arab Emirates. His traditional Emirati clothes were almost the same color and brightness as the sky, so isolating the actor from the background was a major challenge, but the good news is I DID IT …. There were four different scenes I edited in this film by replacing the entire sky area with a cloudy sky. The work was done using the frame-by-frame editing method, which is one of the most complex techniques editors use, but there was no other way to solve this issue—especially since changing the sky wasn’t planned on the shooting day, as the scenario was modified slightly later on. Habib Gholoum — Main Actor A Scene From the Short Film Darkness فيلم قصير · مؤثرات خاصة · BABYLON GATE FILMS عتمة — المؤثرات الخاصة الفيلم الاماراتي “عــتــمــه” هو فيلم قصير من اخراج المخرج الاماراتي احمد زين والذي شارك في مهرجانات دولية مثل مهرجان دبي السينمائي ٢٠١٠، مهرجان الخليج السينمائي الدولي ٢٠١١، ومهرجانات عالمية اخرى. شاركت في صناعه هذا الفيلم من خلال اضافه بعض المؤثرات الخاصة، المشاهد التي قمت بوضع لمسات المؤثرات الخاصة كان مجموعها تقريبا ٤٠ الى ٥٠ ثانية لكنها اخذت من وقتي قرابه الشهرين من العمل كون وجود بعض المصاعب فلم يكن مقررا في وقت التصوير ان يحتوي المشهد على المؤثرات الخاصة لكن النتيجة كانت ممتازة. ماقمت به هو تغيير كامل الى السماء في اربعة مشاهد لجعل المشهد يبدو وكأنه صور في وقت الشتاء بدل الصيف، حيث كانت الصعوبة تكمن في تبديل المشاهد بطريقة صورة صورة حيث تعتبر هذه الطريقة من اصعب الطرق في عالم المونتاج. تم تنفيذ استبدال السماء باستخدام Adobe After Effects. وكانت إحدى الصعوبات الأساسية هي فصل الممثل الذي يقود الدراجة عن السماء شديدة السطوع، خصوصًا أن التصوير جرى صيفًا في دولة الإمارات وكانت الملابس الإماراتية التقليدية قريبة في اللون والسطوع من خلفية السماء. نموذج قبل وبعد للمؤثرات الخاصة بعض لقطات المشاهد من فيلم عتمهHabib Gholoum – Main Actorحبيب غنوم – الممثل الرئيسي A Scene From the Short Film Darknessمشهد من فيلم عتمة
